5 Exotic Hardwoods with the Most Unique Wood Grain

5 Exotic Hardwoods with the Most Unique Wood Grain

At Legacy Shop Supply, we carry a wide variety of domestic and exotic hardwoods in all kinds of species and sizes. But every now and then, I ask myself: What’s the craziest wood we sell?

“Crazy” can mean a lot of things — unusual colors, rare species, or dramatic grain patterns. For me, it’s all about the structure of the wood grain. Some species have patterns so distinctive they instantly stand out in any project.

Here are my top five “craziest” woods based on grain structure alone:

1. Lati (White Wenge)

Also known as White Wenge, this wood gets its nickname because its grain structure closely resembles true wenge. While the colors are lighter, the unique lines and patterns give it an equally striking look.

2. Wenge

True wenge is a deep brown wood with bold, almost black stripes running through it. The contrast in the grain gives it a dramatic, high-end appearance perfect for statement pieces.

3. Tigerwood

Tigerwood is famous for its smooth, almost silky texture. Its warm brownish-orange base is accented by dark streaks that mimic the look of a tiger’s fur. It’s bold, beautiful, and instantly recognizable.

4. Leopardwood

If we’re talking pure “wow” factor, leopardwood might take first place. Its grain resembles leopard spots — or even snake skin — creating a truly wild and intricate pattern that no two boards share.

5. Bolivian Rosewood

I’ve always loved rosewoods, but Bolivian rosewood has a special place on this list. It’s pricier than some species, but worth it for its rich brown color, dark streaks, and occasional purple hues. Its grain is elegant, complex, and downright gorgeous.
